Sigma Nu Fraternity

Excellence for Life: The Legion of Honor

Sigma Nu is more than a place to live and more than something you join for four years. It is a brotherhood built on shared values and a lifelong commitment to excellence. Known as the Legion of Honor, Sigma Nu brings together men who hold one another to a higher standard and push each other to lead with character, integrity, and purpose.

At Gettysburg, our chapter is rooted in the belief that brotherhood goes deeper than common interests. Our strength comes from diversity of background, perspective, and ambition. What unites us is a commitment to excellence in leadership, scholarship, athletics, service, and social life. The bond you build here does not end at graduation. It becomes a lifelong connection and a home base you can return to for years to come.

The House

In 1970, our chapter purchased the stately stone residence at 55 West Broadway from the family of Dr. John McCrea Dickson, a Gettysburg College alumnus, college trustee, and founder of the local hospital. Built in 1929, the house — affectionately known as "The Castle" — has been home to generations of Sigma Nu brothers. We are one of only three fraternities on campus to fully own our house, and it is one of the most beautiful on the Gettysburg College campus.

The house is more than a residence. It is where late-night conversations turn into lifelong friendships, where traditions are passed down, and where memories are made. With comfortable common spaces, recreation areas, and dedicated study resources, it is a place that balances productivity and camaraderie.

Scholarship

A fraternity should elevate your college experience, not distract from it. At Gettysburg, where students invest significantly in their education, Sigma Nu is committed to making that investment count.

Our chapter consistently ranks among the top fraternities in GPA. With brothers representing a wide range of majors, academic success is part of our culture. Resources such as multiple quiet study rooms, a leadership program, and a structured tutorial program ensure that every member has the support needed to excel. Excellence in the classroom is not optional — it is expected.

Social Life and Brotherhood

Sigma Nus work hard and enjoy every moment of college life. Our calendar is packed with events that bring the campus together and strengthen our bond as brothers.

From large all-campus theme parties to our Christmas and White Rose formals, alumni crab feasts, date nights, road trips, and sorority co-sponsored events, there is always something happening at the house. Informal gatherings are just as important — whether it is a spontaneous cookout or a night spent around the pool table or ping pong table. These experiences create stories that last a lifetime.

Athletics

From varsity athletics to Greek intramurals, Sigma Nu brothers compete with intensity and pride. Many of our members represent Gettysburg at the varsity level, while others dominate the intramural fields and courts. Our in-house weight room and competitive spirit keep us sharp year round.

Athletics at Sigma Nu are about more than winning. They are about discipline, teamwork, and representing the brotherhood with pride.

A Pledge Process Built on Honor

Since its founding in 1869 at the Virginia Military Institute, Sigma Nu has stood firmly against hazing. The fraternity was created on the principles of Love, Truth, and Honor — and those values remain central today.

The pledge process is designed to unify a class, educate new members about our history and operations, and integrate them fully into the brotherhood. It is challenging, meaningful, and built to develop character and leadership.

Service and Leadership

Service is a responsibility we take seriously. Sigma Nu raises money for charitable causes and actively serves both the local community and organizations beyond campus. Leadership in service reflects our belief that excellence is measured not only by personal achievement, but by impact on others.

A Legacy of Leaders

Founded in 1869 at the Virginia Military Institute, Sigma Nu has grown to more than 250 chapters across the United States and Canada and ranks among the largest fraternities in active membership. Our chapter at Gettysburg dates back to 1891 and continues to build on that legacy.

Throughout its history, Sigma Nu has shaped leaders across every field. Notable members include:

Harrison Ford — Award-winning actor and global icon of film

John Elway — Hall of Fame quarterback and Super Bowl champion

Phil Mickelson — Six-time major champion and World Golf Hall of Fame member

Bear Bryant — Legendary Alabama football coach

Pat Riley — NBA champion coach and executive

Archie Manning — Former NFL quarterback and patriarch of the Manning football family

Mark Warner — U.S. Senator and former Governor of Virginia

Lloyd Bentsen — U.S. Senator and 1988 Vice Presidential nominee

Clarence Kelley — Former Director of the FBI

Vance Brand — NASA astronaut who flew four space missions

Carlos Ghosn — Former CEO of Renault and Nissan

Tom Osborne — Legendary Nebraska football coach and former U.S. Congressman

Bob Barker — Longtime television host and cultural icon

They represent what is possible when men commit themselves to excellence for life.
